The Annual Excursion 2010 is being held in Galloway from 23 May to 27 May.

An excellent programme has been prepared by the South West Region which gives a flavour of the variety of forest in this productive area of Scotland.

R.S.F.S. Spring Meeting
Sunday 23rd MAY 2010 – Thursday 27th MAY 2010
Hosted by The South-West Region based upon Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire
Theme : " Forestry in the South-West is Flourishing "
Sunday 23rd May
6:00pm Reception at Murray Arms Hotel, Gatehouse of Fleet including introduction to the forests in Galloway by John Dougan, Conservator South Scotland and Rob Soutar, FDM, Galloway F.D.
Monday 24th May.
Morning Cally Woods - FCS Predominantly broadleaved woods managed for production and public access.
Lunch. ABM at Murray Arms Hotel, Gatehouse of Fleet.
Afternoon Castramont Wood - SWT Mixed Oak woodland managed for wildlife conservation
Annual Dinner Murray Arms Hotel Speaker – Hamish Macleod, Managing Director Howie Forest Products and Forestry Commissioner for Scotland.
Tuesday 25th May.
All Day Galloway Forest Park - FCS A long day visit to a major forest with a large annual timber production and major tourist and conservation interests. The route will take you through the heart of the Galloway Hills along routes generally inaccessible to the general public in motor vehicles.
Wednesday 26th May
Morning Howies Sawmill, Dalbeattie A modern, high throughput sawmill, one of the largest in Europe, with ancillary production.
Afternoon Shambellie Estate A long established woodland estate with spectacular trees and an interesting house and museum.
Thursday 27th May
Morning Drumlanrig Estate Visit to the Duke of Buccleuch’s estate in the Nith Valley looking at the largest scheduled Designed Landscape in Scotland and the Continuous Cover forestry within it, the first Douglas Fir in Scotland and a Douglas Fir Seed Stand. On the route home for those heading North.
